Are you capable, hardworking, and overwhelmed by job applications but feel you cannot get the dream role?
Hard work is crucial, but your clear career jump strategy will guide you. Building your resume and preparing for interviews are important, but they are only part of the journey.

Five steps to achieve your dream job

1. How Well Do You Know Your Dream Job?

Understanding the role profiles of your dream job and meeting people in the industry is not just informative, it's the foundation of your transformation journey.

  • Analyze the commonly required competencies and experiences that will guide your career path.

  • Stay active on professional social media, like Linked In, to build your brand. Post content that connects to your interests and milestones. Don't update your LinkedIn only when a position changes or you are a ghost reader hunting for jobs.

  • Reach out to build connections with people already in the industry or career you admire. Re-post articles from those with similar interests or add comments to engage with them actively.

  • Attend networking relevant to your aspirations. You don't need to be alone. Fully leverage network. Meet like-minded people and exchange thoughts, ideas, challenges, and inspirations.

  • Introducing yourself and sharing your dream career is already evoking transformation. As many times you share, as much you will be confident.

2. Do You Know the Stepping Stones to Your Desired Role?

Build a powerful career map with a detailed timeline.

Some common misunderstandings start with goals that range from the near future to the long term. You can try this instead:

  • Start from a long-term goal. What do you want to become after a 10-years?

  • Backward to short-term goals. Where can you go for 1-2 years and 3-5 years?

  • Pinpoint capability gaps from now to the following stepping stones.

  • Identify the right development opportunities to fill the gap and who can support the development.

3. You Have Potential, but Do You Have Enough Visibility?

Break from the 'be humble' mindset prevalent in Asia. Stop being shy.

  • Communicate your achievements. Regularly update your manager and team to ensure they recognize your contributions.

  • Proactively ask for feedback from peers and superiors to improve your visibility and demonstrate your commitment to growth.

  • Volunteer for high-visibility projects within the organization to showcase your skills and dedication.

4. Are You Doing Purposeful Networking?

Effective networking is more than just making contacts.

Develop mutual relationships where both sides benefit, ensuring your networking actions help achieve your career objective.

  • Identify key contacts: Focus on connecting with individuals who can offer guidance, mentorship, or opportunities in your desired field.

  • Provide value: Always look for ways to help your contacts, whether through sharing information, offering support, or connecting them with others.

  • Follow up: Maintain relationships by regularly checking in, offering updates, and providing value over time.

5. Feeling tired from workplace competition?

Peer groups and communities will energize your career journey.

Engaging with peers from various functions can foster mutual support and deepen cross-functional business insights.

  • Join professional groups: Participate in industry-specific groups or associations to connect with like-minded professionals.

  • Attend events. Join networking events, workshops, and seminars to meet new people and gain fresh perspectives.

  • Create peer support groups: Form or join small groups where you can share experiences and challenges and support each other's growth.
